Stockwatch Daily: The chips are up

Euro stocks surge following analyst upgrade...

NEWS European markets bounced back this morning after Nasdaq surged overnight on the back of a semiconductor industry upgrade from Merrill Lynch. Shares in UK chipmakers ARC and ARM jumped, with ARM up 6.9 per cent and ARC up 11.9 per cent. Cable TV operator Telewest was up 10.8 per cent at 10.00(BST) , losing a few points on the 14 per cent it added at opening. The company today announced widened second quarter losses. Other early tech gainers included Siemens, up two per cent, Philips up 2.98 per cent and Nokia up 3.7 per cent.
