NEWS Computer games industry watchdog European Leisure Software Publishers Association (Elspa), believes the rise in illegal copiers of CD's containing games software will worsen with increasing availability of broadband and free telephone calls. Elspa has witnessed the availability of illegal games software triple over the last 12 months. Criminal gangs are said to have become more attracted to this area due to the vast profits to be made. Terry Anslowe, chief investigator of the crime unit at Elspa, told silicon.com that there was an estimated loss of £3bn pounds in games retail sales in 2000, based on legitimate sales of £1bn.
