Telewest abandons broadband venture

Smashed Atom explodes...

By Jon Bernstein, 28 August 2001 07:52

NEWS Cable company Telewest is about to pull the plug on interactive broadband services it introduced less than a year ago because they are failing to bring in sufficient revenue. Smashed Atom, an alliance between Telewest's Flextech division and Atomic Tangerine, was launched last autumn promising interactive TV programmes, adverts and services. However, according to reports in this morning's Financial Times demand for the services has failed to live up to expectation and Telewest is contemplating selling the service on or closing it down altogether. Earlier this year BSkyB closed down its home shopping channel, Open, citing similar problems.
