US crisis: London closes quietly

"The usual market cynicism just isn't here - people feel this one - they feel it could have been them. It's horrific."

NEWS The City of London closed quietly this evening still absorbing the shock of yesterday's terrorist attack on New York and Washington. With many workers still trying to contact friends and colleagues in New York the City stayed strangely quiet all day. One source said: "It's very subdued. Lots of people are still waiting to hear from friends or colleagues who were in the tower and are unaccounted for. "The usual market cynicism just isn't here - people feel this one - they feel it could have been them. It's horrific." There have been low volumes of trading all day and the streets are quiet. The source continued: "Investors' appetite for risk has disappeared. The markets are treading water. People are desperately afraid that they'll look like they are trying to take advantage of the situation. No-one is even talking about specific equities." It is expected the markets will stay quiet for the rest of the week even if the US markets do reopen tomorrow.
