US crisis: Up to 4,000 Nasdaq traders caught in terrorist attack

Minute's silence observed in London

NEWS Nasdaq has confirmed that 4,000 of its traders were registered with addresses in the World Trade Centre and could have fallen victim to yesterday's terrorist action. Seventeen of its leading brokerage firms, including Reuters subsidiary Instinet, had offices in the buildings. Nasdaq remains closed today. However, the SEC has said it expects all US markets to resume business tomorrow. All Nasdaq telecommunications and IT infrastructure remains functional. However, in an interview with a US newswire, Alfred Berkeley, vice chairman of the exchange, said any decision to reopen "has nothing to do with our capabilities to perform but what we think is an appropriate way to rebuild". Meanwhile European exchanges were due to observe a minute's silence this afternoon. The LSE suspended automated trading systems and requested members not to trade during this time.
