NEWS The UK's National High-Tech Crime Unit has asked all phone companies and ISPs to preserve communications data generated last Tuesday in case they contain important clues to help identify terrorists connected to the attacks in the US.
The unprecedented request was made under Britain's Data Protection Act, which normally prohibits companies from keeping such data any longer than is need for billing purposes.
However, in the US the FBI has served search warrants on major ISPs to obtain information about an email address believed to be connected to Tuesday's terrorist attacks.
According to a spokesman at the National High-Tech Crime Unit, the co-operation of telecommunications and the internet industry in Britain was voluntary.
