Gigabit Ethernet bites back

Whoever said speed is more important than penetration?

NEWS Gigabit has doubled its installed base since September 2000 with the technology now pinning down 12 per cent of corporate backbones. Figures from research company Rhetorik show companies in the UK have taken to Gigabit Ethernet as a fast networking backbone technology over the past year. The company cites a decrease in cost as the reason behind the gains. Gigabit's slower cousin Fast Ethernet is also reported to have increased its market share. The findings may go some way to silencing critics who have said Gigabit Ethernet will struggle to fulfil its potential. Over 6,500 UK user organisations were polled for the study.
