Oftel says go forth and co-mingle

Stick your DSLAM in anywhere you want to...

By Ben King, 10 October 2001 17:10

NEWS Oftel has announced a change in the rules to allow rival DSL operators to put their equipment anywhere in BT's exchanges. Until recently companies could only site their equipment in a designated part of the exchange, but today's ruling will allow them to site their equipment anywhere in the exchange. Oftel claims that this will allow companies to reduce the cost of installing their equipment in BT's exchanges, but so far only three companies are still actively planning to install their equipment in BT's exchanges. A BT spokeswoman welcomed the announcement, but added a note of caution: "The issues of co-mingling will bring very serious security problems. We can't have personnel from other companies coming in and trampling all over BT equipment."
