Broadband battle of Hastings on horizon

All about information superhighway, not highway...

NEWS The government is considering proposals to turn Hastings into the UK's first e-city. Such a move would entail providing every home, school and business with broadband digital access. The plans have been drawn up by the South East Economic Development Agency (Seeda) and are in response to the rejection of two bypasses at a cost of tens of millions of pounds. The Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions is due to announce the scheme today, according to the Financial Times. Hastings has long had its problems, and it is thought the broadband plans, in conjunction with other facilities for entrepreneurs and improved rail links, will kick-start the local economy. However, it is not clear what form the broadband access would take. Several towns in Scandinavia and North America have provided fibre to homes, enabling internet access and local services delivered at rates of megabits per second, several times faster than typical DSL or cable modem offerings.
