NEWS Cisco is trying to track down 95,000 power adapters which it sold between April 2000 and September 2001 because they may pose a serious fire hazard. The adapters, which are used with certain Cisco ADSL routers, can, according to an official company statement, "overheat and melt a hole through the housing, posing a fire hazard. In addition, the exposed wires pose a shock hazard." While only one report of an adapter overheating has been received by Cisco, it is taking the precaution of recalling the whole batch. This recall involves power adapters with the part number "34-0949-02." The part number is located on the adapter label, below the Cisco Systems logo. The power adapters were shipped with the following ADSL routers: Cisco 827, Cisco 827-4V, Cisco 826, Cisco SOHO77, Cisco SOHO77-50 and Cisco 827-EUR. The adapters are used with the ADSL routers used by small businesses, small offices, home offices and corporate teleworkers. Cisco says consumers should stop using the power adapters immediately and contact the company to receive a free replacement. See http://www.cpsc.gov/ for more information.
