NEWS Cable tycoon John Malone looks set to extend his media empire in Europe. In the UK, Malone's Liberty Media group already owns 25 per cent of Telewest and 19 per cent of BSkyB and now it is exploring buying News Corp's 22 per cent stake in Germany's Kirch PayTV, according to a report in the Financial Times. Liberty is already the largest cable operator in Germany following the company's purchase of Deutsche Telekom's wholesale cable units in September this year. A holding in Kirch PayTV - itself run by a media mogul, Leo Kirch - may raise the interest of competition authorities. Liberty is also considering upping its stake in UPC, Europe's largest cable operator.
