Ebone picks fight with Oftel

Open letter to Edmonds says 'get a move on'...

NEWS UK telecoms regulator Oftel has again come under fire for not doing enough to open up the domestic local loop. Duncan Lewis, CEO of new telecoms entrant Ebone, has sent Oftel director general Dave Edmonds an open letter, demanding he force BT to ease access to the local loop. If that fails to happen the government initiative to set up broadband services across Britain would become an embarrassing disaster, he claims. The move echoes an open letter sent by a number of new telcos across Europe to EU competition commissioner Mario Monti last week, in which BT and other incumbents were accused of 'strategic incompetence' over their reluctance to open up local access leased lines, the infrastructure directly behind the local loop. The EU is expected to publish a report on the current state of telecoms legislation this week.
