NEWS Europe's e-tailers have had a healthy festive period, with the growth in the number of people visiting such sites outstripping that of general internet use.
Most countries witnessed 40 per cent more visitors to e-tail sites this Christmas than last, according to figures from Jupiter MMXI.
Over the same period, the number of people accessing the internet overall grew by less than 30 per cent.
Jupiter estimates that around 33 million Europeans used e-tail sites in December, spending around E2.9bn (£1.8bn).
Amazon enjoyed the lion's share of the market. In the UK, amazon.co.uk was the most populat e-tailer, with just over 18 per cent of the total audience.
In second place was amazon.com, with just under 10 per cent of the total market. Argos.co.uk came in third place.
In Germany, amazon.de romped into first place with 27.8 per cent of all visitors. Bol.com, another bookseller, was in second place with 8.4 per cent share.
Separate figures from Nielsen/NetRatings looking at the UK market in more detail also put amazon.co.uk in first place with 2.3 million unique visitors during December.
eBay.co.uk, tesco.com, argos.co.uk and lastminute.com completed the top five and all had just over one million visitors each during the Christmas month.
