eBay and Priceline - dot-com marriage of the year?

NEWS William Shatner-backed travel site Priceline.com and online auction giant eBay are to team up to sell travel services on eBay's site. eBay said in a statement that 42 per cent of its users booked travel online in the last year, spending $8.4bn, and eBay is now bidding to try and get some of that action, selling holidays, hotel reservations, timeshares, and flights. Although Priceline is famous for its name your own price business model eBay sales will be conducted in an auction style. Users will also be able to buy services for a fixed fee. Priceline caused wonder in August 2001 by making a profit, though the 11 September terrorist attacks have severely depressed the travel market. Priceline was originally promoted by William Shatner, who starred as Captain Kirk in the original series of the popular science fiction series Star Trek, though he parted company with Priceline last year.
