Marconi in talks to sell off £400m defence unit

£400m? That'll do nicely

NEWS Beleaguered telecoms equipment maker Marconi is in talks to sell its Italian defence unit in the on-going quest to sort out its massive debt problem. The company's shares rose 15 per cent yesterday as news of a possible deal broke. Marconi said in a statement: "Following recent press speculation, Marconi PLC today confirms that it is in preliminary discussions with a number of parties concerning the future of its Italian-based Strategic Communications business." Such a deal could raise as much as £400m.
