Record industry scuppers Napster relaunch

Here's where the story doesn't end

NEWS Napster has been forced to delay the relaunch if its controversial file swapping service by up to nine months because of a lukewarm response from the record industry. The all-new service will require the record labels to licence their music for download from Napster's site. But so far, the labels have been unwilling to open up access to much of their artists' work. Konrad Hilbers, CEO of Napster, told the FT: "I cannot start with the amount of titles that the music companies are offering us. We would disappoint our customers." Napster was due to relaunch this week, but will remain closed until the record industry plays ball, Hilbers added.
