NEWS Government websites are becoming increasingly efficient and easier to use. A report from Accenture awarded over half of the 23 sites tested with a 40 per cent "maturity rating" or above. This relates to how effective online government services are. This is the third year Accenture has carried out the survey. This year's results are a huge improvement on 2001, when just two sites achieved more than 40 per cent. Canada gained the highest overall rating and was commended for its ease of use. Singapore came in second, while the US achieved third place. Key to site improvements is an overhaul of bureaucracy and a focus on the needs of site visitors. The UK was the second highest ranking European country in fifth place. Of all the countries surveyed, only Finland and Singapore offer government services via mobile phone.
