NEWS Amazon is reported to be making moves into the Canadian market with a .ca site going live as early as this summer. The company has been in talks with Canada Post and Vancouver-based book distributor Raincoast Books, according to a recent report in Canada's National Post. The report, citing unnamed publishing industry sources, claims the deal is close to completion although Amazon and the Canadian companies involved have not commented on the rumours. While Canada is Amazon.com's biggest export market the book seller has had trouble gaining local audience share because of laws which protect Canadian cultural industries - including book publishing - from outside competition. Under federal legislation, foreign book retailers cannot establish a presence in the country unless they partner with a Canadian firm. Amazon makes one third of its sales from non-US customers and expects to increase this to 50 per cent within three years.
