View from the bridge: Priceline's enterprise in good shape

Return of Kirk gives figures a perk!...

NEWS Priceline, the online travel site promoted by Star Trek's William Shatner, has boldly gone where it's only once gone before - into profit. The company made a net profit of $5.7m, or two cents per share, for the first quarter of 2002, compared to a loss last year of $13.7m. Priceline first made a profit in the second quarter of 2001 but the slump in the travel market following the terrorist attacks in New York last September pushed Priceline back in the red. US airlines have cut their fares since 11 September, making Priceline's name-your-own-price discount model less attractive. The company's revenues were down three per cent, to $261.9m from $269.7m a year earlier. Priceline was initially fronted by William Shatner, famous for playing Captain Kirk in the cult television series Star Trek. He was replaced by Sex in the City star Sarah Jessica Parker in January 2001, but came back on board in February.
