...and send your dial-up to Dar es Salaam...

NEWS Pipex is turning up the heat on its broadband rivals with a new charity trade-in scheme for old modems. The company is offering new subscribers the chance to trade in their old dial-up modems for a free DSL modem when they sign up for Pipex broadband. Pipex is teaming up with Computer Aid International to distribute the used modems to schools and community organisations in the third world. The offer only applies to external modems complete with power supply and cables, and expires on 13 June 2002. The modems will be exchanged for an Fujitsu FDX 310 ADSL Modem worth £94. Jaf Shah, fundraising and marketing manager at Computer Aid International, said: "It's good to see a company such as Pipex taking a responsible attitude to recycling. "The modems they are donating will be used alongside refurbished Computer Aid International Pentium computers and supplied to schools and community organisations in developing countries. "This contribution will help to bridge the growing digital divide between developed and developing countries and extend equality of educational opportunity to disadvantaged groups." Computer Aid International estimates that 1.5 million computers are junked every year in the UK, with a further 1.5 million placed in storage and never used again. Pipex is also promoting a free set-up offer worth £58.75 with a monthly fee of £23.44. This price point will up the pressure on the current market-leading ISP, BTopenworld, which charges £29.99 per month without a free modem. Pipex, which launched its broadband service in January, has signed up nearly 20,000 customers.
