NEWS A significant number of US e-tailers which managed to survive the dot-com fallout are making good progress in their quest for profitability. According to a report by Shop.org, 56 per cent of the e-tailers surveyed were profitable in 2001. Sales increased from $42.4bn in 2000 to $51.3bn in 2001 - an increase of 21 per cent. The study predicts sales will reach $72.1bn this year. The web operations are thought to have benefited from the growing use of online purchasing by consumers and their incresing confidence in buying on the web. The results from the study are in contrast to a time when many e-tailers, including etoys.com and pets.com, suffered humiliating deaths.
