Shares surge as WorldCom doldrums clear

FTSE looking slightly perkier...

NEWS The FTSE surged 100 points in early trading this morning on the back of Nasdaq gains. The index climbed over 105 points, or 2.3 per cent, to 4,646.2 by 07:25 (BST), but fell in later trading to stand 92.70 points up at 4,633.30. Despite the jump, the FTSE is still 11 per cent down on the start of the year. In the US, the Nasdaq closed 30 points up Thursday as shares achieved their biggest increases in two weeks, with bank and drug stocks gaining most ground. For related news, see:
