Tiscali boss critical of EU over unbundling

NEWS Renato Soru, Tiscali CEO, has spoken out against the way European politicians have tried to make national telcos within the continent open their networks to competitors. "The local loop unbundling," - the process whereby alternative providers get access to incumbents' cabling reaching from exchanges to customer premises - "doesn't make economic sense. It will cause a lot of disasters in the industry," Soru said in an interview with the FT. The European Commission maintains it has made progress with local loop unbundling (LLU), and has even taken action against the largest regional telco, Deustche Telekom, following complaints. However, Tiscali - which both owns a pan-European network and relies on access granted by others - doesn't think enough is being done.
