And plans another assault on big business...

NEWS Two days after Cisco listed Dell as a networking rival, 3Com has followed suit and dropped the PC maker as a distributor. The news comes as 3Com detailed its first quarter financial results, which saw the firm narrow its losses from $223m in the same period last year to $32m. Revenues fell 22 per cent to $305m. Dave Smith, 3Com's VP of sales, told CRN that Dell's network tactics had forced his company's hand. "Dell was selling 3Com product when a Dell solution didn't fit, but they were leading with Dell switches," Smith said. Cisco took a similar decision on the networking side at the beginning of the week while HP has also cut ties with Dell on the printer side. Meanwhile, CEO Bruce Claflin said the company was actively working on "wringing unnecessary costs" out of the company and planning more high-end products. He said: "To enhance our status as a tier-one enterprise networking company, we will expand our higher end data and voice offerings, allowing us to compete more effectively for mid- to large-size customers and the channels that serve them."
