NEWS Intel has opened another research and development facility outside the US, this time cutting the red tape on a lab at the University of Cambridge that will house 20-25 scientists. Intel Research Cambridge will focus on what the chips giant calls Proactive Computing - specifically how networks, computers and software development technologies will enable new types of distributed systems in the future. Professor Ian Leslie at the University of Cambridge said in a statement: "We have really landed on our feet here: a technological relationship with a world-leading company who sees the benefit of putting research results in the public domain." The latest Intel lab joins similarly set up facilities at universities in Berkeley, Pittsburgh and Seattle. However, the Cambridge facility is not the company's first in Europe. Last year it created Intel Labs Barcelona located at the University Politecnica de Catalunya campus, focusing on microprocessor advances, and it has labs on several sites in Russia.
