NEWS Yahoo! is to launch a paid video subscription service which will go head to head with RealNetworks, offering entertainment, news and sports clips direct to users desktops. Yahoo! is planning to launch the service today, with an offering of news, sports and entertainment clips from sources such as US broadcasting giants ABC, CBS and News Corporation's Fox network. The basic service will cost $9.95 per month, or users can pay a higher charge of $16.95 for a package which will include premium sports clips - with a predominantly US flavour. In the coming weeks, Yahoo! Platinum is also expected to pick up content from CNBC Dow Jones Business. Yahoo! plans to add more content to its existing categories, and branch out into new categories, said David Mandelbrot, Yahoo!'s vice president and general manager of media, entertainment, information and finance. Music and children's programming may eventually be offered, he added. The Platinum service will place Yahoo! in direct competition with RealNetworks' RealOne SuperPass. That service has gained 900,000 subscribers paying a monthly fee of $9.95.
