NEWS Around half the workforce at Cable and Wireless' London headquarters are to be shown the door in the next round of redundancies to hit the ailing telecoms firm. C&W is refusing to comment in advance of announcing its annual results next week, but the Financial Times today reported that at least 200 headquarters staff, half of the total, would go in a cull which would see several hundred other job losses across the company. The report says that the job losses are part of a plan to cut overheads in the struggling company. C&W sacked 3,500 staff late last year when its attempt to become a major international player unravelled. Next week, the company's new bosses, chairman Richard Lapthorne and CEO Francesco Caio are expected to announce a new strategy for the group when they produce its annual results. The loss-making US arm of the group's struggling data services business, C&W Global, is likely to be put up for sale.
