Hotmail problems unrelated to spam attack claims MSN

Servers are just creaking because it's so damn popular...

NEWS Hotmail has denied that apparent problems with its service are related to the Randex worm which crippled Australian ISP Telstra earlier this week. While the webmail giant did not deny it is experiencing problems, which have meant some users are unable to access the site at peak times, it said they are more likely related to high demand from users than anything more malicious. A number of global ISPs have been hit by a huge surge in traffic resulting from the Randex worm, which spammers have used to create open relays on Windows-based PCs. Most notable among those affected was Telstra's Big Pond ISP. Users attempting to access the Hotmail service in the past week have occasionally been faced with an error page informing them 'The server is busy'. Although the Randex effect has not been ruled out altogether, a spokeswoman for Hotmail told silicon.com that the timing is probably a coincidence. "It is highly unlikely that the error messages are related to the Randex worm. They are probably just due to the sheer number of users trying to access the service in peak times," she said. However, she said MSN is constantly reviewing its service and said the company will consider increasing capacity should the problems prove to be ongoing. "Naturally, MSN is always evaluating server capacity and uptime, and will make changes as appropriate," she added.

I have been unable to access my hotmail accounts at work for the last week, but I can access them from home.
I had to start a yahoo account just to email their support address.

Does anyone know of a phone number that you call where you can actually talk to someone?

Likewise, I have not been able to pull up hotmail from my personal computer. Nevertheless, I can pull it up from work computers. It seems unfair and irresponsible for Hotmail and Microsoft to provide a service, yet, not be willing to provide access to trouble-shooting specialists. Corporate responsibility seems appropriate during this HOTMAIL MALFUNCTION!!

The .NET Passport service is currently unavailable at this Web site for one of these reasons:

    • The site may contain an error or be experiencing a problem that affects the .NET Passport service.
    • The site may not be an official .NET Passport-participating site.

For the past three days, after entering my password, this is the message I receive. Do these guys even know they have a problem? How do I contact them?

I can't get in to my Hot-mail account.
It pulls up Passport, Passport, Passport. Will not accept my password.

Outlook is culprit I think, it opens stuff with no filtering.

When I go to their support page and click on "contact us" it sends me to a "this page does nto exist on our servers, if the problem persits contact support"...then just keeps looping around. Is this some kind of joke? See for your self:

So my Outlook wont synchronize...and how the heck are they gonna know theres a problem?

I have been unable to pick up my Hotmail for 24 hours, although others in the house, with Hotmail accounts, have been able to gain access. I even set up a new Hotmail account in order to reach customer service. And it works fine. What is going on, does anyone know? I tried to call the number they post, but of course it is always busy.

Microsoft is wrong about this problem. It has nothing to do with volume it seems to me. I can access my wife's Hotmail account, right now, from this computer, but not my own. Now, I am no computer genius, so maybe their is an intelligent explanation that is over my head, but how come I can access one Hotmail account from this chair but not another?

Why is that MSN has no way to contact them if there is a problem with there service? People have important emails coming to hotmail and we can not get to them. I know I do but I can't get to them. A little advise to service MSN leave contact number so people can get a hold of you.

I discovered a way around this. The problem started for me after I changed my IE privacy settings to block Third Party cookies. When I removed this setting, I still couldn't log into Hotmail. So I went back to the Privacy settings, went to the web site edit list, and removed all the managed websites. Voila, Hotmail works again! Don't know which block caused the problem, I'm just glad to get back in to my Hotmail.

I wonder could this be the problem which seems to have closed down hotmail?
Stuart Okin, UK security chief at Microsoft, said home users have been particularly hard hit by Sasser because they lack the know-how of large firms in dealing with such attacks and may have installed Windows out of the box and never thought to update it.
After checking the internet and looking at ten of thousands of pages headed Hotmail problems dating back to 1999, I think it's not just the home user who lack the lnow how?

I had the same problem and then i saw a little eye with a white minus sign inside of a red circle at the bottom of ie right above the taskbar tray. I cliked on it and got me to a screen where i could see hotmail listed in there right clicked on it and selected always allow and that fixed it.

At some point some how it got restricted.

    ......................

This just worked for me. thx.

B/S - I am in several msn groups and have hotmail accounts... In these groups there are people being hacked - groups disappearing - or taken over and the owner moderators being dismissed. Accounts are being used to mass email to members.. Hotmail/msn has pissed off I know over 45,000 ppl alone in several of my groups .. And not just in american - the uk - austraila - canada - Mexico - spain - scotland - ireland - new zealand - germany - france. MSN was told by several that this is happening.. But msn has denied any problem.. Now i ask you.. if no problem - how can over 45,000 ppl that i know of be wrong..

when entering username and password to access Hotmail, my cursor flashes at about twice normal speed. typically, it takes me about 5 gos to get into site; and, even then, it's only an image of the front page of my account. the fonts are all ballsed up and i can't open any messages. is this a virus or is it hotmail? Yahoo mail not affected.

go into view > privacy report > look at the list of websites > select one that has one of the hotmail graphic items > click summary > at bottom left select 'allow cookies'.

this immediately allowed hotmail to open properly on loging in to it again.

I tried everybody's suggestion. Wayne's trick did not work. Somebody suggested that go to tool, internet options & click on advanced tab & then look for HTTP 1.1 settings, uncheck "use HTTP 1.1 setting".
Thanks for the help. You can try this.

I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering from Match the Picture syndrome, it's driving me mad! I e-mailed Hotmail Support - they replied with a suggestion that didn't work, said to contact them if the problem persists and strangely, they haven't replied since. Any suggestions?

I believe that Hotmail doesn't want to admit that the server is under attack or that there is an inherent problem, b/c they don't want to see the mass migration to Yahoo mail or someother mail server.

You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect e-mail address or password, or someone else is trying to sign in to the account
