NEWS UK businesses sold 39 per cent more over the internet in 2002 than they did in 2001, up from £16.82bn to £23.3bn.
The latest statistics for that calendar year, as produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), also found £6.4bn of the £23.3bn total - around 27.5 per cent - were sales to households. This figure is up on previous years' figures but indicates up to 72.5 per cent of transactions are B2B.
The state statisticians also worked out the online total was 1.2 per cent of all sales during that 12-month period.
Goods continue to outpace services online, accounting for £15.4bn of sales.
The sector leading the way is classified as wholesale/retail/catering/travel/telecoms.
In parallel to the sales figures, the ONS research found UK businesses bought £22.9bn online in 2002. The number is up 14 per cent from 2001.
The figures exclude the financial sector.
