Webcam stripper Colonel suspended

Exposed army secrets – and much, much more – online

NEWS Webcams are a way to keep in contact with your friends or family when you're not there. Perhaps even a way to show someone special what you look like with your rocks off. Nothing wrong with that, you might say. Except if you happen to be a top dog in the British army and you're exposing army secrets as well yourself.

Colonel Varley - former assistant chief of staff in Northern Ireland - allegedly liked to strip naked and show himself standing to attention over the internet. He would also chat about meetings with Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon and reveal other military secrets, according to an ex-girlfriend, Serena Christopher.

The allegations were made in the Daily Mirror and have been taken seriously by the Ministry of Defence, which has launched an investigation into the colonel and suspended him from duty.

The military secrets that he is alleged to have revealed include troop deployments in Iraq and details of terrorist surveillance operations.

If found guilty, Colonel Varley could be court-martialled and jailed.
