BT free flights giveaway to boost broadband take-off

Anyone remember Hoover…

NEWS BT has unveiled its latest weapon in the fight to sign up broadband customers - subsidised air travel.

Any customer who subscribes to one of BT's consumer high-speed internet access packages before 20 June will receive a voucher entitling them to a return economy flight to one of 11 airports in Europe and the US.

"This is yet another example of BT taking the lead in the market to drive broadband uptake and make Broadband Britain a reality," claimed Duncan Ingram, managing director of BT Openworld. "For anybody who may have been recently thinking about installing broadband in their home, now is the time."

However, BT's offer is subject to a number of conditions which have the potential to leave some customers paying more than they might expect.

For a start, the flights aren't completely free, as customers will have to pay airport tax and any travel insurance in order to get to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Nice, Paris, Prague, Atlanta, Boston, New York, Philadelphia or Washington.

Also, customers can only depart from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester. BT has warned that it's not possible to reach all 11 destinations directly from each of these four UK airports, and that customers will have pay to get themselves to the departure lounge (apart for Northern Ireland residents who also will get a return flight from Belfast to a mainland UK airport).

Voucher-holders will only be eligible to travel with "selected airlines" - which BT says "may include BMI, British Airways, Air France, KLM and easyJet".

Once a customer has signed up, they need to give BT at least 45 days' warning of the day on which they want to travel. And finally, flights to the US airports can also not be taken during July or August.

Despite these restrictions, BT's offer could stimulate higher broadband take-up in the UK. Several rival ISPs have recently announced cheaper products, so customers will have to decide whether to plump for a subsidised flight rather than another ADSL product that might be a few pounds a month cheaper.

BT must also avoid repeating the experience of Hoover, which in the early 1990s ran a promotion where anyone who spent more than £100 on a Hoover product got a free flight to America. This offer was hugely popular - as flights to the US at that time cost much more than £100. But the promotion proved a disaster, as Hoover hasn't anticipated the level of demand, and resulted in legal action from customers who accused the company of invoking bogus technicalities to avoid paying for their flights.

Or, of course, BT could spend the money on enabling more of us actually to be able to access UK broadband (what I believe continental Europeans think of as low speed narrowband - even if better than UK dial up..)

Hope that this BT Flight Promotion is better organised than the know Infamous " Hoover Flight Fiasco"! It went down as the largest Corporate Marketing Blunder. The rest as they say is History, costing Hoover's parent company at the time over £48. Million & fighting court cases all over the country. Harry Cichy who organized the actions against Hoover, say's make sure you read the smallprint on all these offer's!

Big deal BT, Ryan Air offer these kind of offers day in day out!

What a con. Don't forget BT charge a lot more for broadband than any other provider! Compared to my current one it's £10 per month more!

The difference in the Infamous Hoover Flight Fiasco, was it was not all above board. At the start they had no flights! However it backfired on them?
Due to a group of consumers who took them on notibly: Sandy Jack, Harry Cichy & Lee Robertson from the Pressure group and not least for the Media & the BBC for exposing there questionable tactics.

Does any one know how the BT Flight Offer is going? Have seen small adds, in the news. Bt seems to be playing it down a bit?
Seems to have gone very quiet? Unlike the Hoover Flight Fiasco.

BT promo on the flights, does seem to have gone very quiet. I think the offer is used as more as a publicity stunt, rather than giving people flights. BT will, not knock, Hoover's title of the Largest Marketing Blunder.

Maytag CEO Len Hadley, owners of Hoover Europe at the time of the Free Flight Fiasco, remarked that the Fiasco left the impression that those in charge were " a group of bumbling fools." One of Hoover's Travel Agent's was Your Leisure from Warwick.

Who really payed for the Now Infamous Hoover Flight Fiasco? In 1993 the Hoover UK Pension Fund had a surplus of over £100 million. Maytag Hoover's owners at the time planned to reduce the fund by £60 million. £30 million went back to Maytag in the USA? In 1995 Maytag sold Hoover to the Candy Group. Many will say as a direct result of the Flight Fiasco.

AVON calling? Or Not As The Case may be? Offer a Hoover style promotion.
The ASA have rapped Avon's Knuckles!
But after the Infamous Hoover Free Flight Fiasco, should it happen again? ASA should put things in place in the first place!!!! Ten years on & it would seem it's the ASA that needs to get their act togeather?

I subscribed to BT Broadband 2 months ago and have still not heard back regarding my free flight. There is a number to call but you get cut off after being on hold for 6 minutes. A complete con I think! Has anyone had any success with this offer?

BT hits Trouble with its Free Flight Offer. BT said Friday 3 September that hundreds of applicants were having difficulties with free flights. Not another Hoover ten years on. Sainsbury has a similar offer may be even bigger numbers.

Complaints on Free Flight offers should be made to the ASA. They will need to know what flights you tried to obtain.
    (i.e. destination,dates,class etc)
and the reason that the advetisers have given for not providing you with them. www.asa.org.uk

MKM Marketing & Promotions - they are behind these promotions. Have they taken out enough Indemnity on these offers? Has the offers got problems with over redemption like Hoover?

Free Flight complaints go into BBC Watchdog prog. This is ironic as the Hoover Free Flight Fiasco was one of the first Items covered by Watchdog Team. They sent undercover reporter in Hoover's travel agent, that blew the lid of the free flight promotion.

Free Flight concerns raised on BBC Radio 4 You and Yours 28 September the Hoover & BT & E & J Gallio free flight offers disscused. The Daddy of all Free Flight Fiasco's remains the Hoover offer of the late ninties.
It would seem if you complain to BBC Watchdog or Radio 4, you have more chances of getting your free flights.

I'm caught up in the Daily Express Free Flight Offer.

I've been told - today - that I have been allocated a flight to Boston in March. How do they work what dates you are going. Apart from putting my choice of month in the initial application I have had nothing from them since, no voucher that I should have received with 42 days of the offer closing which I believe should have been accompanied by a form to fill which, of course, I didn't have either. So how can they have allocated me a flight when they don't know how many days I want. There is nothing in the original blurb to indicate that the offer is for a weekend/week/2weeks etc.

Any idea. I can't get any sense out of MKM

The Express £10 Cruise Offer is in the "incapable hands" of Rise Travel. Has anyone actually gone on one of their £10 cruises? I suspect not. Trading Standards are being approached by several unfortunate readers.

I have also applied for the Flight Offer in the Daily Express to go to New York. I only received a congratulations letter. I have heard nothing from them. I am now taking action and have issued a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority. Nobody from the Express Newspapers have contacted me going back since April 2004.

If you are also experiencing problems, please also log a complaint.
