And did they? Well, yes, obviously...

NEWS 24.06.99: Newspapers are likely to be the most stable of all the traditional media, as new technologies propel the industry into a period of volatility, according to research house MIB Group.

The report claims UK national newspapers will be able to create an unrivalled number of innovative online revenue streams, while strong branding will help prevent dramatic erosion of traditional income.

24.06.04: In the brave new world of the internet, newspapers were seen very much as the dinosaurs. And while it is incredible to many that the public still get their news a day later - or sometimes a week or month late - paper-based publishing is still in reasonable health.

While many mags have died away and many more continue to limp towards unopened cellophane-wrapped obscurity, the newspapers manage to keep going strong. Readership figures have dipped and seen peaks and troughs but the marriage of the traditional form with online revenue streams - be it paid-for crosswords or Page 3 merchandise - has ensured the major names have done alright for themselves despite a far more widespread decline in overall media revenues in recent years.

Online media and the pure-play dot-coms continue to snap at their heels but the reputations of the major papers ensured they had a ready-made user base available to drive online. Micropayments - which make possible charging for content on a daily ad hoc basis - are also slowly proving to be a major bonus to publishing giants looking to squeeze online revenues out of users.
