Arise Sir Tim: Father of the web gets day at the palace

And not before time... well deserved...

NEWS Father of the web, Tim Berners-Lee, today received his knighthood from the Queen, recognising his contributions to the internet.

For Berners-Lee the knighthood marked the latest honour he has received since creating the protocols for the World Wide Web in the early 1990s.

"I am humbled by this great honour," said Berners-Lee. "The web came about through an ongoing collaboration with my fellow investors and developers worldwide. Everyone in the Internet community should be recognized by this honour."'

Berners-Lee first learned of his elevation to knighthood in December when he was informed his name was included on Buckingham Palace's New Year honours list.

The knighthood is just one of the many honours and awards that Berners-Lee has received for his efforts. Last month, the World Wide Web inventor was also honoured with the Millennium Technology Prize from the Finnish Technology Award Foundation. And in 2002, Prince Philip awarded Berners-Lee the Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts.

Probably our forward looking establishment has only just heard about him.
Tim Berners Lee should have been honoured a long time ago. He's done a lot more for the world than all those footballers and TV stars who have been wallowing in honours for years.
