Worried about hack attacks...

NEWS 10.01.00: Virgin.net shuts off email service for around a quarter of subscribers because of security concerns.

The previous week the ISP spotted breaches of its web email systems and so decided to disable incoming mail and the uploading of data to Virgin.net-hosted web pages.

According to Virgin, affected customers have been told to visit the Virgin.net site for instructions on how to reactivate their accounts.

10.01.05: Although hack attacks and security breaches continue to be a worry for everyone doing business online, the deluge of phishing scams and spam received in inboxes has become the greater concern for email providers.

They are such a problem for online auctioneer eBay that the company has introduced a private email service to protect its customers. The service contains only emails from other eBay customers or from the company and thus lowers the possibility that con artists looking to steal personal information and credit card number will have any success.

eBay and PayPal have been targeted by phishing scams in particular because of their well-known brands and large user base.
