NEWS Music fans have bought more than 50 million songs from Apple's European iTunes Music Stores in its first year of operation, according to the Cupertino company.

The iTunes Music Stores were launched in the UK, France and Germany in June 2004, and now operate in 17 European countries including Finland, Greece, Portugal and Spain. Apple said iTunes offers a catalogue of one million songs from major music companies and more than 1,000 independent record labels.

Apple's vice president of applications Eddy Cue said: "We're thrilled to have sold and delivered over 50 million songs in our first year. We'd like to thank European music fans for making iTunes such a success."

Apple said more than 430 million songs have been purchased and downloaded worldwide from iTunes since it launched two years ago.
