NEWS Intelsat is to buy fellow operator PanAmSat in a $3.2bn deal that will create the world's largest satellite firm.
Intelsat, which sells telephony and data services, will merge its operations with smaller rival PanAmSat, which focuses on video and data offerings, to create a network of 53 satellites across 220 countries.
According to the pair, the new company will mean improved reliability and geographical reach, as well as boosting capacity for broadband and IPTV.
Together, Intelsat and PanAmSat are expected to produce annual revenues of $1.9bn. The combined company will be headed by Intelsat's CEO, David McGlade.
