NEWS HP is stepping up its involvement in the RFID (radio frequency identification) chips sector. The vendor will be devoting €150m to the development of the technology during the next five years.
The investment will represent around one per cent of the company's annual R&D budget.
However, as Franz Lanza, director of HP's RFID division, told Forbes magazine, it should enable the company to be competitive when faced with those that focus more heavily on the field, such as Sun or Symbol.
HP already adds RFID chips to the printers and computers it supplies to large US retailers, such as Wal-Mart, to help them manage inventory.
