Poles apart for most-northerly video transmission

The team will attempt to measure the thickness of the polar ice cap next year in a bid to estimate its lifespan.

The Vanco Arctic Survey expedition will take 120 days, cover 2,000km and take roughly 10 million measurements of the ice's thickness via a radar system pulled along on a sledge.

Virtual network operator Vanco developed and integrated the technology involved to keep the Arctic team's communications system operating smoothly.

Six analogue phone lines were installed and tested for data transmission before their direct dial numbers were logged onto a central data processor - held on the sledge - to enable six-way automatic dial-up and data transmission.

A router in the UK headquarters combines the six separate data sets into one file, these are then reassembled and viewed via a laptop.

The system can also handle large file transmissions as it has been designed to redial if there is a temporary satellite gap or dropout during transmission.
