BugNet challenges Microsoft over Office 95 security hole

By Dominic Maher, 3 July 1998 09:18

NEWS BugNet has reported a security fault in Microsoft Office for Windows 95. The US-based authority on bugs and fixes says Excel, PowerPoint and Word have an error which allows important information normally hidden from view - such as passwords - to be revealed by simply opening files in a text editor program. Jonathan Hulse, Office product marketing manager for Microsoft, explained that the problem relates to users of Office 95. He said: "With most users having moved to Office 97, the problem is not as big as BugNet may suggest." He went on to say that Microsoft reacted to the problem immediately to eliminate any concerns. Users who have this problem can download a patch from http://support.microsoft.com/support/
