Sophos warns of Windows bug

NEWS Sophos, the anti-virus software producer, has issued a virus warning to Windows 95 and Windows 98 users. The virus attacks the Bios program that manages dataflow from the microprocessor. It overwrites the start-up mechanism, making it impossible to reboot without replacing the chip, and overwrites data on the hard disk. Found in .EXE files in Windows applications, the virus - known as CIH - is triggered when the PC's clock reaches the 26th day and has been in existence for two months now. However, a source in the company said: "We haven't heard of any cases where this virus has actually been triggered - all the main virus companies are offering protection for it."
