Hackers release Windows spy tool

NEWS A group of hackers called Cult of the Dead Cow has released a tool that it claims will spy on computers running Windows 95 and 98. The group says the application - dubbed Back Orifice - can remotely control a Windows 95 and 98 computer by capturing data in the computer and sending that information to a remote Internet site. The tool allows users to monitor all keystrokes typed into a computer and download files remotely. A security statement posted on the Microsoft site insists the tool does not expose computers running its popular operating systems to any danger. "Back Orifice does not compromise the security of a Windows network," it states. Microsoft's statement notes that in order for any remote monitoring tool to work, "the user must install, or be tricked into installing the program". The hacker must also know the user's IP address, and the tool will not penetrate a firewall. The statement adds that users running Windows NT have nothing to fear, as Back Orifice runs only on Windows 95 and 98.
