NEWS Encryption and PKI (public key infrastructure) technology dominated the RSA Data Security conference held in the US yesterday. GTE launched its Cybertrust Accelerator Program for desktops which it claims makes it easy for companies to incorporate digital certificates to create secure email, encryption and Web access. RSA itself announced the result of a partnership with Security Dynamics - a line of products also designed to bring certificate technology into the mainstream. Netscape joined in with a raft of additions to its directory server giving it the facility issue digital certificates. Dave Birch, director of the ecommerce consultancy Hyperion, said the announcements signal the beginning of PKI's domination of common desktop applications. "It's been clear for some time how important PKI is and this steady enabling of common desktop applications will speed the transition of certification into mainstream so seamlessly that people won't really have to think about it," he said.
