Sun-Netscape and Equifax unveil digital ID scheme

NEWS The Sun-Netscape Alliance and Equifax Secure have unveiled plans to create a joint ecommerce authentication and digital certificate service for businesses. Under the agreement, Equifax Secure - the online security division of Equifax - will use Netscape's Directory for Secure E-Commerce as part of its digital certificate services for ecommerce providers such as banks, credit card companies and retailers. The joint venture aims to give traders a higher level of confidence in online transactions by verifying both buyer and seller identities. The companies also hope to enable better user access to secure services - such as bank accounts - which require strong proof of identity before membership can be established. In a statement, Dr Stuart Wells, senior VP of infrastructure products at the Sun-Netscape Alliance, said: "By using more advanced authentication measures, companies will reduce the risk of identity fraud and help increase their customers' confidence in ecommerce." The Alliance - a joint venture between Sun and AOL-owned Netscape - was formed in March to develop ecommerce software.
