Sophos calls for security rethink

NEWS Anti-virus specialist, Sophos today urged firms to go 'back to basics' and rethink their IT security, after many corporates struggled to ward off the latest spate of viruses. Sophos claims it was inundated with calls from multinationals looking for help after the recent 'network-aware' viruses such as CIH, ExploreZip and Melissa struck, causing widespread problems. Graham Cluley, senior technical consultant at Sophos, said companies should be ready for anything, because viruses don't necessarily need to have a destructive payload to cost companies money. He noted that just about every organisation has been hit by a virus, and that they should be taking basic precautions: don't trust unsolicited emails, don't trust anything that looks unusual even if from someone you know, and keep your virus software up to date.
