NEWS An authentication service will be unveiled today, backed by software giant Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), which is designed to verify business users and ensure they are authorised to make a Web purchase. Companies signing up for the service - called eccelerate.com - receive a digital ID with their own unique number. When they undertake a transaction, the numbers are cross-referenced with D&B's global database and the transaction is verified. Gehan Talwatte, partner at eccelerate.com, claimed the market for Web authentication is still wide open: "We are still in the early days of electronic commerce. The next phase in business-to-business commerce is when business relationships are founded on the Internet - and that is when credentials become important. "It doesn't matter if you are a Fortune 1,000 company or a SME. The Web levels the ground and allows you the same access." Talwatte admitted that no Internet transaction is 100 per cent secure and eccelerate.com will not insure its users against fraud. But he claimed the service will provide all the necessary information to make an informed decision on which company to choose. "This is a big play for us. We believe the Internet is going to fundamentally alter the nature of business-to-business commerce. Our vision is to be present in every single one of those transactions," said Talwatte. eccelerate.com is currently being trialled worldwide, the company hopes to launch globally early next year.
