NEWS FTC Commissioner, Orson Swindle, has stated that the US government does not intend to regulate businesses to protect consumer privacy. The Commissioner was commenting on a recent debate surrounding revelations that Net company, RealNetworks, has been monitoring Web surfer's music listening habits without their knowledge (see http://www.silicon.com/a33784 ). Swindle reportedly told a conference of attorneys hosted by US law firm Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and & Rosati that the government cannot be responsible for every business and consumer. It is Swindle and the FTC's belief that businesses will practice good privacy practices through self-regulation.
