NEWS UUNet has signed up to Starlabs' anti-virus service for ISPs. Starlabs uses three anti-virus packages - McAfee Total Virus Defence, Datafellows F-Secure and vfind from Cybersoft - to unwrap and scan all users' email, including attachments. Starlabs, itself an offshoot from ISP Star Internet, provides a Virus Control Centre where Control Towers comprising 24 mail servers handle the checking. Infected messages are intercepted, and senders and administrators are notified. Other Internet providers including Level 3, Planet Online and PSINet are expected to endorse the Starlabs initiative. UUNet is aiming the service at its corporate, leased line customers, and has named industrial gases company BOC as one of the first users. The MCI WorldCom-owned ISP is also considering a rollout outside the UK.
