UK ISPs slammed over Web censoring survey

By Felicity Ussher, 9 March 2000 18:09

NEWS UK ISPs have taken to censoring Web content, according to cyber-liberty campaigner, Internet Freedom. The group surveyed ten random UK ISPs and found that all ten removed access to newsgroups that broke their codes of conduct. Some, including AOL, only removed paedophilic content. But ISPs such as Poptel screened out anything they deemed irrelevant to their users. Internet Freedom claims ISPs should not take the law into their own hands and leave Web regulation to the courts. However, the survey also disclosed that many ISPs are not clear which content is legal, and what their responsibilities are.
