'Big three' look to the future of the mobile phone

NEWS Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia have joined forces up to ensure the security of proposed transactions over mobile phones. The world's big three handset providers want security and payment services integrated into devices, bringing trusted electronic transactions to the mobile Internet. As such, they are inviting contributions from telecoms, financial services and IT companies, and will seek to create a de facto standard. However, they won't be starting from scratch. The three companies said they will build on existing technology including WAP - in particular the Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) and Wireless Identification Module (WIM) security functions - and wireless Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technologies. Ericsson is also a founder member of the mobile PKI Radicchio consortium, which now has almost 50 members.
