NEWS Security experts are dismayed and surprised by Powergen's breach in security, exposed by customer John Chamberlain and first reported by silicon.com yesterday. Douglas Hurd, business development manager at Network Associates, highlighted experts' concerns that Powergen had retained sensitive customer data without sufficient security to protect it. He said: "Whether this information was on the web server or not, there are ways to protect the data. Tools exist to tell you in real time what someone's doing with your site, but it wouldn't shock me if they couldn't detect it happening because they didn't have these tools in place." Hurd added: "If Chamberlain really did this then it is detectable and totally preventable." Powergen was unavailable for comment at the time of writing. If you are a Powergen customer and would like this breach in security to be looked into by the Data Protection Commissioner, send your complaint in to silicon at editorial@silicon.com and we will pass them on to the DPC for you.
